Theresa watering our new wildflower garden

We planted a 70-foot long wildflower patch just outside our kitchen window.  Thanks to our neighbor Glen for lending us his rototiller.  That sure made a tough job much easier!

September Wildflowers at Little Wolf Nature Preserve

Posted by Timm

September is the last month for new wildflowers in southern Kentucky, and many of the wildflowers are leftover from August.  There were no new wildflowers in October at Little Wolf Nature Preserve.  We still have a few Sunflowers and lots of Smartweed remaining, but most other wildflowers are gone.  So this wildflower update for September will be our last of the year.

Hibiscus (Swamp Rose-Mallow)

Hibiscus in our Butterfly Field

We had to buy Hibiscus (Swamp Rose-Mallow) to plant at our previous home in northern Kentucky.  But here in southern Kentucky, Hibiscus grows for free in the wild!  This big, beautiful, showy flower sits atop a fast growing plant that can reach 7 feet tall, with flowers exceeding 8” in diameter.  Dozens of Hibiscus are growing in the field I can see out my office windows.  Hibiscus makes a terrific centerpiece for the dinner table, but it only lasts for the day it was cut, before folding up permanently.

June Wildflowers in Little Wolf Nature Preserve

Yucca

Although yucca plants are more prevalent in the desert southwest, some yuccas are native in Kentucky too.  The yucca’s oblong fruit can be cooked and eaten if the seeds are removed.

Little Wolf Creek Road

Facing northeast on Little Wolf Creek Road

Little Wolf Creek Road is a beautiful drive, but also very curvy and narrow.  Most sections of the road can barely fit two cars passing each other slowly.  Little Wolf Nature Preserve is on the right side of the road in the photo above, and you can see our mailbox down a bit on the right.
