Summer Hiking

Barn reflecting off Jimmy Pond

In the past we wondered if we would still hike a lot if we moved to Little Wolf.  When we used to visit, there wasn’t much to do here other than hike, so we hiked pretty much every day we were here.  But now that we live here, there are always bills to pay, work to do, TV and Internet to fill our time.

Ice Cliffs

Posted by Timm

We hiked up to the cliffs below Little Wolf Peak in early March.  Though it was nearly 60 degrees outside, there were still a couple inches of snow on the ground and massive ice formations on the cliffs.

We encountered some of the largest icicles we’ve ever seen.  Many were over 10 feet long and too thick to wrap your hand around, and a couple icicles grew to as much as 20 feet long.

The beavers have left our pond once again.  Theresa is trying to move a big tree that fell over the entrance to the beaver den.

Kim Hikes Hurricane Ridge

Our friend Kim visited Little Wolf for the first time.  It was a beautiful, sunny fall day about a week after color peak.

Hiking in Little Wolf Nature Preserve

Posted by Timm

Hiking is one of our favorite activities at Little Wolf Nature Preserve. Hiking allows you to see the Preserve up close and personal in its natural state. Many of Little Wolf’s best features are accessible only by foot.

There are over 8 miles of maintained and unmaintained trails in Little Wolf Nature Preserve and neighboring Daniel Boone National Forest. And in the winter, the vegetation is clear enough to hike openly off trail over thousands of acres of wilderness, if you are careful.

Before you set out hiking, please review our Hiker’s Checklist for your safety and enjoyment on your hike.
