What to Bring to Little Wolf

Posted by Timm

We are excited that you are planning to visit Little Wolf Nature Preserve in southeastern Kentucky.  There are many outdoor activities you can enjoy here, including hiking, four-wheeling, boating, fishing, stargazing, photography, bird watching, collecting wildflowers, and just relaxing.  To make your visit enjoyable and safe, there are some things that you need to bring with you to Little Wolf.

Recommended

We highly recommend that you bring the following items when you visit Little Wolf Nature Preserve:

  • Hiking boots or shoes with a firm sole (waterproof recommended)
  • Hiking socks
  • Layers of clothing (expect temperature swings of +/-20 degrees)
  • Clothing change (for after the hike, in case you get wet or muddy)
  • Waterproof rain coat
  • Baseball cap or other shade hat
  • Warm hat in winter
  • Gloves and scarf in winter
  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Any medical or dietary needs

Optional

We can provide the following items, however you may wish to bring your own:

  • Backpack, daypack, or fanny pack
  • Drink bottles
  • Drinks (1 quart per person per day)
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent (April through October)
  • Hiking stick
  • Flashlight
  • Binoculars
  • Compass and/or GPS
  • Fishing gear
  • ATV
  • Small rowboat or kayak
  • Frisbee, football, soccer ball, or kite
  • Toys for the kids

Notes

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • There is no cell phone signal here.  You need to drive about 5 miles to get a signal.  But we have a land-line phone and WiFi Internet available to guests.  Share our land-line phone number with your family back home, as that’s the best way to reach you while you are visiting Little Wolf.
  • The nearest grocery store is 20 minutes away, a super Walmart.
  • This is a dry county, and the nearest liquor store is a 90-minute round trip.  So bring any alcohol with you.
  • Our home is a non-smoking environment, but you are free to smoke anywhere outside.  Please dispose your cigarette butts properly.
  • Dogs are welcome.  However, we have 4+ dogs and many chickens roaming free here.  So your dog(s) must be dog- and chicken-friendly and able to run free without a leash.
  • Law enforcement and medical assistance is at least 20 minutes away.  When hiking up the mountain, it may take 60 minutes or more to receive medical attention, so please be careful.
